Norfolk and Somerset artisans sign up for Cybake

November 23, 2016

Pye Baker and Taylors Traditional Bakers are the latest firms to sign up for Cybake.

Pye Baker is the brainchild of John Watt, who goes by the nickname of the town he was born in – Grimsby. Originally a chef in some of London’s top restaurants, he moved to Norwich to open a hotel, fell in love with the area and established Pye Baker in 2008 to sell artisan bread, cakes and savouries developed from his own recipes. You can read more about Grimsby (pictured above) in this excellent article by food writer Karma Tsechi.

The business has two sites; a wholesale bakery operation based in the north of the city and a retail bakery and café in Norwich city centre. Plus Pye Baker stalls appear at markets all over the region.

The “Pye” comes from an Old English form of the word “pie”, by the way, and was inspired by the market charter granted to Norwich in 1158 by Henry II. The charter required that a local baker had to make “Yarmouth Pye” every year as a levy to the king. Sadly, our knowledge of what a Yarmouth Pye actually consisted of has been lost in the mists of time.

Taylors Traditional Bakers is a third-generation family run firm based in Bruton, Somerset.

Founded by his grandfather and great uncle in 1945, the craft bakery has been run by Sean Taylor and his wife Catherine since 2007. As well as running a considerable wholesale business, Taylors’ stalls (pictured below) appear at a huge number of farmers markets, town markets and shows across the South West of England.

You can find them in Wells, Nailsea, Sherborne, Crewkerne, Frome, Royal Wootton Bassett and Dorchester, to name but a few. As the Taylors make exemplary use of social media, you can catch up with their full schedule on Facebook and Twitter.
